Last weekend, we stopped by Raleigh’s Ridgewood Wine and Beer, looking for an opportunity to taste the now famous Foothills Sexual Chocolate. On a snowing Saturday afternoon, the tasting room offered a wide choice of beers and several wines for the regular Saturday afternoon wine tasting, 2-5 pm.
A rotating selection of 16 beers – including quite a few NC craft beers — can be purchased here in 4 oz. “flight size” or pint servings, depending on whether you are in a tasting or drinking mood. The tasting room is casual, with television screens, bar stools and tables and big, comfy leather chairs.
We both tried Foothills Sexual Chocolate imperial stout that delivered everything it promised: rich dark chocolate, coffee, dark toffee and dark fruit. At nearly 10 percent ABV, 4 oz. was just right.
Other beers we taste:
Big Boss (Raleigh) bourbon-barrel aged Big Operator black raspberry ale: Dark in color, with hints of coffee, molasses, dark raspberries.
Big Boss Hell’s Bizz-ness sour ale with cherries: Golden sour ale, flavored with cherries.
Duck Rabbit (Farmville, NC) porter
Mother Earth (Kinston, NC) Silent Night imperial stout
