Stopped in at North Raleigh’s Bottle Mixx (Raleigh’s Brennan Station) recently for an Aviator Brewing tasting event. First, I can’t say enough about Aviator’s bourbon barrel-aged Frost Nipper – a nice dark beer, brewed with smoked malt and more than a hint of bourbon sweetness from the barrels. This is a rare treat, so stop at the Fuquay taproom for a pint as soon as you can.
Second, I was really impressed with Bottle Mixx, which offers a great selection of both beer and wine. While beers are on tap for at the store’s tasting bar, there is an enomatic wine service where you can serve yourself a taste, half or full glass of a wide variety of featured wines with a pre-paid wine card.
Bottle Mixx opened in October, but already has a good neighborhood following. Despite the cold, a good crowd turned out for the Aviator tasting, where $6 bought you a glass and three tastes or six tastes. I had a glass and taste of the Frost Nipper, along with tastes of the Steamhead California Common and Black Mamba Oatmeal Stout.
Here’s a description of the Frost Nipper, though it doesn’t really capture the benefits of the bourbon barrel aging: “The beer is dark in color, a bit darker than brown ale. There is a combination of Perle and Willamette hops to provide a contrasting intensity with the fall spices. The beer contains a generous amount of smoked malt.” 7.2% ABV
