On a recent trip to the NC beaches, we took an afternoon to have lunch and a beer at Wilmington’s Front Street Brewery. I was excited to visit, having tasted several Front Street beers at the N.C. State University Club recently.
The restaurant and brewery is in the heart of Wilmington’s historic waterfront district and had a lot of traffic that day from the courthouse where the Jeffrey McDonald appeal was underway. It is a cozy place for a beer at the bar, lunch or dinner.
The brewery is behind glass right inside the front door and usually offers afternoon tours between 3 and 5 p.m. Unfortunately, the day we were there, they were preparing to brew a green hop beer that had to be done quickly, so no tours that afternoon. We did see the brewmaster shoveling spent grain out of the mash tun, with several boxes of green hops from Washington State waiting nearby.
Great lunch specials are reasonably priced. With our pints of dark Scottish ale and raspberry wheat ale, we enjoyed shepherd’s pie, chicken nachos and seafood chowder with a salad. For good beer, food and a great atmosphere, visit Front Street Brewery next time you’re at the coast.
